Sanctuary

Even though a riot was raging on the Main Street of town, the sombrero had not been disturbed. It had a small sanctuary in the center of the riot. The space was ten feet in diameter. It was as if there were an invisible fence around the small circle because people would not step into it. Life and death were now raging outside the circle but not a single person would venture into it.

There was no reason for them not to step into it.

They just didn’t do it.

The circle was still occupied by the mayor who was still shouting his license plate number to the crowd who could no longer hear him. You could see his mouth moving but it was as if nothing were coming out. The roar of the crowd had turned the mayor into a mime.

The two men were still standing there crying.

That was their fate.

The people in the circle have now been taken care of.

Only the sombrero is left.

It was still lying in the street. No one had touched it. For no reason at all the crowd left it alone. Not a single person had stepped into the circle and tried to pick it up. The sombrero just lay there, unaltered or affected by the commotion going on about it.

Here are a couple of more interesting things about the sombrero:

1. It was not made in Mexico.

2. Yes, it did belong to somebody but they were very faraway.
